Winner, 1st Edition, "My (Funny) Love Affair Story Writing Contest for Soon-to-Weds

Meet Our First Winner!
The picture on the left taken in 2004 shows our first winner in the first My (Funny) Love Affair Story Writing Contest – Kay Baking (now Dadivas).
She was with her then fiancé, Dr. Rafa Dadivas, when she received her P5,000.00 cash prize and P15,000.00 worth of gift certificate from Gorgeous Smile Dental Café.
Her winning story was actually very simple but it was so true it touched our hearts in a very nice way. In other words, it was a “feel good story”. Parang movie!
Kay and Rafa were eventually married on December 8, 2004 at Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park and the reception was held at Kasalikasan at The Fort. Josiah’s Catering took care of the feast.

WAITING NO MORE
by Kay P. Baking
I always thought that I’d grow old as an old maid. I had z-e-r-o love life, never been kissed, nothing ever! When I was 13, my Dad already gave me permission to have a boyfriend. I didn’t want one because I still got more street games to play with my neighborhood friends. After my college grad, my Dad asked me why I still didn’t have a boyfriend. I just told him that having a boyfriend is not on my priority list. Who wants to have a boyfriend when I just breathed my fresh air of independence?
Five years later though, at 25, I still didn’t have a boyfriend! Even I was asking myself why I didn’t have any! All of my female cousins my age already have boyfriends. When we’d have a family reunion, they would bring their hubbies and I am left to tag my little sister. During those gatherings, I would make my relatives laugh with my silly jokes and I always put smiles on their faces. They thought that I was really funny and happy. Yes, I was happy but deep down inside I was lonely. Whenever we’d have stories to share about each other’s love life, my cousins were eager to share their stories while I was busy listening to each story, because I didn’t have anything to share. At that time I was in the can’t-believe-I’m-still-single-at-25 stage! I was kind of losing hope. I didn’t have someone to share my laughs with, someone to take care of me, hold my hand when I’m scared and tell me that everything’s going to be ok. Deep down inside, I longed for someone that I would love and would love me back. Well, I was really losing hope, until I met Rafa.
While I am the ever jolly, outspoken, spontaneous and cowboy Kay, Rafa, on the other hand, is my TOTAL opposite. He’s from a very conservative and religious family, like the ones who never miss a Sunday church mass. He was the prim and proper type of guy, always neat and orderly with his stuff. Even his shirts are wrinkle-free. Though we are poles apart, we actually share one thing in common. We belonged to THE CLUB - the NO BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND SINCE BIRTH CLUB!
It was in 1998 when Rafa’s path and mine crossed. He was in med school and I was already working as a corporate trainer. He had a gay classmate named Francis who happens to be the best bud of my gay trainee, Garry. It’s a gay world, don’t you think? Francis was using Rafa’s mobile phone to test Garry who was using mine. Eventually, Rafa and I became text mates.
It was through Paolo, a close officemate of mine, that Rafa and I met. Through my kwentos to him about my “prospect papa,” he realized that the Rafa that I was crushing on is the same Rafa he used to bully when they were kids! Small world, isn’t it? So, to make amends to him, Paolo set Rafa and I on a date. It was one hell of an exciting experience!
One date led to another and our friendship bloomed. As I knew Rafa better, I became closer to him. (Hmmm… do I smell romance?)
Last October, 2000, I was scheduled to go to UK for 6 weeks. This was the first time during our dating period that we’d be really far from each other. So on October 4, 2000, while I thought we were just going to the mall down south, Rafa drove all the way to Tagaytay. We went to Josephine’s and to my surprise, he prepared a despedida dinner for me! And to add to my surprise, he asked me to be his girlfriend (Thank God!). We became a couple on that same day.
We have tons of good memories as a couple. Though we have differences, we are able to reach out to each other. Rafa is not only my boyfriend but he’s also my best friend, my confidant, my partner. He is the one who I share my laughs with, takes care of me, holds my hand when I’m scared and tells me that everything’s going to be ok. I love him and he loves me back.
On December 8, 2004, I will marry my best friend… the one I laugh with, dream with, live for, love.
Oooopsss, as for your info, I’m the first one to get married in the family!
